| For
signalling and attracting attention: |
| Aqua
Buoy
This versatile piece of kit is the jewel in the crown
of the safety pack. The dayglo orange buoy inflates
with just a few puffs, and you can then attach it
to your board, so it stands 1.5m tall in the water.
Alternatively, you can easily fix it to a section
of mast or your boom, to wave overhead as a distress
flag. If you need to abandon your rig you can leave
the aqua-buoy attached - it has a "reward"
notice and a place for you to write your name and
address on, so hopefully your rig will be found and
returned to you. The buoy can also be used as a buoyancy
aid, and best of all, has been designed so that it
can quickly be fixed through the back footstrap and
around the tail of the board to create enough lateral
resistance to get you home should your fin break.

Howler
Whistle
The loudest whistle we've been able to source (unbelievably
loud, in fact!), fully SOLAS approved (for marine safety
use), and used in Special Forces survival kits. |
 |
Heliograph
If the sun is shining, this little gadget is incredibly
effective for distress signalling over long distances
(if you can see it, you can signal it, basically). |
 |
| Lightstick
Once activated, this glows bright red for up to eight
hours. Great if you're caught out at night!

| The
Bag
And then of course, there's the bag itself. This has
been designed specifically to fit snugly against the
back of your harness, and comes with extra straps
and instructions on how to do this. It works particularly
well with a waist harness, but can be used on a seat
harness too. In an emergency it's easy to open yet
keeps everything secure until you need it, and has
a lanyard mounting point (lanyard also supplied
as standard) so that you can keep the heliograph,
whistle, knife, safety cards and whatever else permanently
tied to the bag, and won't lose them even if you're
being buffeted by heavy chop and swell.
The bag also has sufficient spare space to include
other items such as a small screwdriver, your mobile
phone or car-keys in an Aquapac, a bar of chocolate
or Kendal Mint Cake, even a hip flask! |
