Very few windsurfers carry any form of safety gear, largely because windsurfing is by its very nature an escapist sport; the last thing most sailors want to do is to be cluttered with emergency accessories. But also, simply because it's not actually that practical - how and where do you carry the stuff? This is something we have been giving a great deal of thought to, and working together with London manufacturing company Aqua Pro, have put together what we believe to be the ultimate windsurfing safety pack - a small, lightweight bag that fixes to the back of your harness, and can then be forgotten about until you actually need it. (Or indeed, can be used for carrying car-keys, chocolate and anything else you think you might need while you're on the water.). Within the bag is a complete set of solutions to pretty much anything that might go wrong with your windsurfing kit, along with a complete set of instructions on waterproof laminated cards which tell you exactly what to do. And if you need to get rescued, the pack contains methods for attracting attention for both day and night time, to ensure that you get spotted and picked up quickly.

How it Works
If you find yourself in an emergency, simply spin your harness around, pop open the pack, pull the safety cards out to check what to do in your specific circumstances, and then use the other items in the pack to sort yourself out or get yourself noticed and rescued.

You may think you know all about self rescue already, but when you're out there being buffeted by the waves and it's starting to get dark, it's all too easy to make mistakes, or suddenly forget that trick you'd heard on how to deal with a broken mast or whatever. By following the instructions on the cards you can be sure you're doing things in the right sequence and the most efficient way possible.

We've put a great deal of thought into this kit, and have taken advice from organisations such as the RNLI on how to make it as effective as possible. There's certainly nothing else like it on the market - it really is something you can simply strap on to your harness and forget, until you need it. Think of it as an insurance policy! You can of course put your own survival kit together, although as said if you were to buy these items separately it would cost you considerably more than getting them all together in this one kit.

Plus which, we really want to promote a ‘best practise' safety culture, so if you have any ideas as to what else could be usefully included in the kit we will let all safety pack owners know about it. We will also welcome any additional self-rescue safety ideas which could be added to the safety cards. It will be possible to add additional cards to the set at a later date - if we do get some good ideas to incorporate, these would be sent out as a free upgrade to all safety pack buyers.
